ROBERT BAUVAL

TALISMAN - The Hermetic Tradition from Ancient Egypt to the Modern World

The religion, star-lore and philosophies of dynastic Egypt did not die with the fall of this once great empire. The Graeco-Roman world disseminated it into a corpus of literature attributed to Hermes, the Hellenic form of Thoth, Egyptian god of knowledge and writing. Known as Hermetica, it was taught in secret among the mystery schools of the Gnostic Christians, until finally it was carried by Arab philosophers and sages into Europe, where it was enthusiastically embraced by astrologers, cabbalists and alchemists who in turn introduced it to the greatest thinkers of the Italian renaissance.

Like a flower coming into full bloom, the hidden principles of a stellar religion already several thousands of years’ old became the staple diet not only of the enlightened world of the Middle Ages, but also the seventeenth-century Rosicrucians, as well as modern Freemason and Templar organisations.

In his exclusive lecture for the Questing Conference, Robert will trace the spread of Egypt’s secret doctrine, and demonstrate how it is still being practiced and disseminated in a most blatant manner within the modern world - the subject of his new book TALISMAN, co-authored with Graham Hancock.

Robert Bauval was born in Alexandria, and spent his childhood in Belgium. After settling in Britain, he became a civil engineer by profession, but following a visit to Egypt he developed an interest in the relationship between the movement of the stars and the religion of ancient Egypt, leading to the writing of his world best-seller THE ORION MYSTERY (1993), co-authored with British writer Adrian Gilbert. Since then he has gone on to write several book of international acclaim, including KEEPER OF GENESIS (1996), THE MARS MYSTERY (1997) and TALISMAN (2003), co-authored with Graham Hancock, and SECRET CHAMBER (1999). His theories on the astronomical capabilities of the ancient Egyptians, including his belief that the air shafts of the Great Pyramid are aligned to major stars, are today challenging conventional views on ancient Egyptian religion.
