LYNN PICKNETT and CLIVE PRINCE
LECTURE REWRITING RUDOLF: DEMONSTRATING THE CRYING NEED FOR ALTERNATIVE HISTORY
In 1941 Hitler's Deputy Rudolf Hess flew to Scotland on a doomed peace mission and almost immediately disappeared into official obscurity, emerging only to be tried and condemned to life imprisonment at Nuremberg. To most people then, and indeed most people now, the official version - that he went mad, stole a plane and set off to enemy territory without Hitler's knowledge to meet up with a non-existent British peace party - is nothing more or less than the simple truth. Yet, Lynn Picknett and Clive Prince will demonstrate that not only is the official line the complete opposite of what really happened, but that the Hess mission was one of the most pivotal events of the 20th century - highly significant because it obscures the truth about the British establishment and the what was really happening during the war. What now masquerades as history is very largely still old wartime propaganda. It seems that manipulating the facts was not merely a Soviet obsession. Lynn and Clive's research on this subject eventually became their book Double Standards (produced together with co-author Stephen Prior and historical researcher Robert Brydon), but their talk will include new material, such as Hess's link to Rosslyn Chapel and the truth about Otto Rahn's search for the Holy Grail at Montsegur.
